What are Magic Amulets?
Magic Amulets are a deriviative of Amulets which are a derivative of amulets on the Ethereum blockchain.
An amulet is a kind of poem that depends on language, code, and luck. To qualify, a poem must satisfy these criteria:
Magic Amulets are also a derivative of Loot. Loot Project already has some necklaces and amulets but they mostly just give stat upgrades.
Magic Amulets have rare and magical powers. The earliest known Magic Amulets are Upgrade Materials, which can be used by adventurers to upgrade their loot.
Since then, Amulet Smiths have begun to uncover new ways to make increasingly powerful Amulets.
There are Magic Amulets which allow the wearer to summon a familiar or transform the wearer into a magical creature. Other amulets summon powerful spells or conjure magical objects. Some amulets have subtler effects -- causing the wearer to desire something. Always be very careful with magic amulets because they may not behave as expected.
What makes Magic Amulets magical?
Unlike some other Loot, Amulet Smiths must put a lot of effort into finding magic words which can be used to craft a Magic Amulet. Furthermore, in order to imbue their Magic Amulet with powers, Amulet Smiths must make a sacrifice to offset the energy that went into minting their amulet. Without this sacrifice, an amulet may just be a worthless trinket.
Unlike other NFTs, some Magic Amulets have multiple components. All Amulets have a poem. All valid Amulets have a carbon offset URL. Magic Amulets may have additional components such as this mythical Magic Amulet which has lore about the origin of the amulet and even an artist's depiction. The additional lore/metadata is stored off-chain and accessed via an ENS domain. Whoever controls the ENS subdomain is free to update this data (but be careful, Appraisers don't take kindly to people who fapsclaim their Amulet has magical properties ).
How do I know if an amulet is magical or just worthless junk?
If you aren't an expert on Magic Amulets then you'll need an Appraiser to take a look at it. Fortunately, you've found one!
How do I obtain a Magic Amulet?
The easiest way to obtain a Magic Amulet is to buy one. Right now, the only Magic Amulets that are available for sale are Upgrade Materials. I curate a list of known Upgrade Materials here (Google link) and also here(IPFS link; less pretty and updated less often). The Google link also has a tab with a simple script I used to generate magic words for Upgrade Materials. (Mint your first Amulet!)
Before buying Upgrade Materials or Magic Amulets make sure the carbon offset link is valid! Without it your Magic Amulet may lack the requisite magic needed!
If you made an amulet that you think might be magical, contact an Appraiser (e.g. me) and I'd be happy to take a look. I can even give you a free *.magicamulets.eth subdomain to set as your offset URL if you contact me after minting but before revealing.
What happens after all the Upgrade Materials are minted?
There are a limited number of magic words which can make the first generation of Upgrade Materials (~556 sets of words, by my count). The answer is "I don't know" what will happen after they are all minted. Rumor has it that some alchemists are working on methods to make even more Upgrade Materials but these new methods may require larger sacrifices to imbue the materials with powers.
What if I minted a Magic Amulet but I messed up the sacrifice (carbon offset URL)?
We know that mortals occasionally make mistakes.
If you messed up your sacrifice on one the the first 556 Upgrade Materials (e.g. you forgot to add a carbon offset or messed up the link), find the tweet by this account https://twitter.com/WildAmulet that announced your Upgrade Material mint with proof-of-sacrifice (e.g. a cloverly receipt or unique payment to offsetra) and make sure an Appraiser sees the tweet (contact info below). We'll update our list of known upgrade materials to reflect your sacrafice. If you don't have a twitter account, contact an Appraiser.
